Questions! We get lots of questions! Listed below are the answers to some of the questions we get on a regular basis. Please remember we're always happy to talk to you about any aspect of your dental health, your treatment or our practice.

How do I choose a cosmetic dentist?

It's essential to know the qualifications and experience of the treating dentist to obtain the best results. The term "cosmetic dentistry" is a popular term that many dentists are promoting, and of themselves as a cosmetic dentist. At this time, cosmetic dentistry is not a specialty (like orthodontics) and does not require certified skills. However, it is a discipline of dentistry that requires advanced training and an artistic touch to attain an aesthetic and healthy smile. Ask your cosmetic dentist about their credentials, training, and experience in this area. A very helpful way of understanding your dentist's skill is asking to see their portfolio of before and after photographs. Dentists who are enthusiastic about the art of cosmetic dentistry always take photographs of their own cases.

What are veneers?

Veneers mostly cover the front surface of teeth and are commonly used for cosmetic purposes. Veneers can be made of either resin (the same material used for fillings) or porcelain (a glass-like material). These are thinly sculptured pieces of tooth-shaped porcelain that fit over the front of the teeth. Bonded to the front surface of the tooth to restore or improve position, shape, and tooth color, they can make a dramatic and immediate improvement to one's smile and overall facial appearance.

Is there a difference between the veneers you get from one cosmetic dental office and another?

Yes, the demands of high-end aesthetic dentistry have created many variations of veneers. Thus, all veneers are not created equal and can vary widely. We have extensive training in the art of smile design, which determine the colors, line angles, shapes, thickness, translucency, occlusion (how your teeth comes together) and many other factors. We use a variety of lab technicians to custom-make your veneers to your face, gender, smile, and even personality. You can be involved in the selection process as much as you like, but part of why you select a cosmetic dentist is in their ability and artistry to explain what looks great in your case.

I'm an adult and don't want to go through braces. Can veneers help correct my crooked teeth faster than orthodontics?

Porcelain veneers are a perfect alternative to braces for many adults. Veneers can correct the shape of teeth that are not aligned correctly, have gaps, and spaces. Patients who have always wanted straighter teeth but have no desire to undergo years of treatment with braces usually love this new technique. Braces can take years and months, but veneers may be able to achieve the same result in weeks. In fact, even if you have had braces in the past and the size and shape of your teeth is not pleasing to you, veneers may be the perfect solution.

Will bleaching or whitening hurt the health of my teeth?

Teeth Whitening is generally safe when monitored by a dentist. Some over-the-counter products are also safe, but take a long time to work. The major disadvantage to whitening is it does not last very long depending on what you eat and how much stains you've accumulated. Also, some people may experience slight gum irritation or sensitivity which resolves when treatment ends. Of course the ultimate whitening would be porcelain veneers which can last much longer.

How long do your cosmetic dental procedures take?

In most cases, bonding or resin veneers can be done in one visit. Accelerated whitening is usually in one visit. Lumineers and porcelain veneers typically require two visits, about 10 days to 3 weeks apart for fabrication and fitting. Since each person's cosmetic need is unique, the above guideline is only an estimate. Cosmetic procedures should never be rushed in order to personalize your teeth seamlessly. When we develop a customized treatment plan, we can give you a more precise schedule based on your dental needs.

Why is it important to have my bite fit correctly before having any cosmetic dentistry performed?

An improper bite can lead to fracture and eventual failure of crown and veneers. These materials are very much like glass, and because of that are breakable. It has been determined that a person can generate over 1000 lbs per square inch when they grind or clench their teeth. These destructive forces need to be managed so you can receive a smile that not only looks magnificent, but also lasts a long time.

When it comes time to consult with a dentist about fixing problems or improving your smile, it's important to visit a dentist who is well educated in occlusion- how the teeth fit together. Ask your dentist to explain how the work they do will improve your appearance and provide proper function.

Will dental implants work for me?

Anyone who is missing one or more teeth due to injury, disease or decay may be a candidate for dental implants. The main limitation is the amount of available bone. Your dentist is the best person to evaluate whether dental implants are a viable solution for you.

Is old age a problem?

Occasionally, older patients express concern that their age may prevent them from enjoying the benefits of dental implants. However, health is more of a determining factor than age. If you're healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you're probably healthy enough to receive dental implants. Certain chronic diseases may contraindicate implant treatment. Your dentist will determine if you are a candidate for dental implants after a careful evaluation of your dental and health history.

How will dental implants affect my life?

Implant-supported replacement teeth look, feel and function like natural teeth. This means that you can eat and drink whatever you are used to. You can continue smoking as well, if you must. But most importantly, dental implants often improve quality of life in a very concrete way. People who have felt embarrassed and worried because of their tooth problems are often overwhelmed by what new permanent teeth can do for their self-esteem.

What are the advantanges of implants over dentures and bridges?

  • Improved appearance: When you lose entire tooth – crown and root – shrinkage of the jawbone may cause your face to look older. Dental implants can stop this process. A traditional denture or bridge doesn’t.

  • Maintained natural teeth: With traditional methods, two teeth adjacent to a missing tooth must be ground down to anchor a bridge. Dental implants often eliminate the need to modify healthy teeth.

  • Permanent solution: There are no loose parts to worry about. The implant is stable and comfortable. No adjustment is need after installation. Normally, it will serve its owner for life.
